The eviction of residents of calle Sarmiento will be discussed next Thursday

-

The dispute over the evictions affecting 62 homes on calle Sarmiento, in Manilva, will not be dealt with at an extraordinary council meeting, despite the urgency of the matter and the requests made by various platforms and in meetings held with residents. Finally, according to information obtained by this newsroom, the Town Hall has decided to include the issue as the first item on the agenda of the ordinary council meeting scheduled for next Thursday, the 5th, just 5 days before the eviction order.

The Town Hall has been considering all the options, but there is no budget allocation that would allow it to exercise the right of first refusal (Derecho de Retracto) to buy the homes and halt the evictions, as requested by one of the platforms. Instead, the council debate will be used to request support and assistance from higher authorities, as the council is unable to fund the purchase of the properties.

Residents’ call to action by various platforms

Residents of the affected homes and anti-eviction associations are maintaining their call to try to stop the evictions, with demonstrations on 10, 11 and 12 February.

The organisers insist that the process affects elderly people, more than 100 children, people with disabilities and families in particularly vulnerable situations, and that many of them have had rental contracts. According to the residents, the homes were handed over to them in a deplorable condition, which they have had to repair themselves over the years, and now a vulture fund, the current owner of the property, intends to sell it and make a profit, leaving all these families on the street.
