Electric scooters will not be allowed to travel on pavements or in pedestrian areas, nor exceed a speed of 25 kilometres per hour, from this Saturday and, in addition, they must comply with the rules of the road like all other vehicles.
Town Halls will have to adapt their bylaws to the arrival on urban roads of personal mobility vehicles (VMP) and, if they consider it appropriate, provide parking areas for these means of transport (scooters and Segways).
In Manilva, on a temporary basis, specifically from 22 June to 30 September, Manilva Town Hall banned the passage of these vehicles on certain stretches of the seafront promenade, in order to mark off the busiest stretches, which were becoming a danger because of the large number of bicycles and scooters. Now, however, the rule is imposed by the DGT (Spain’s traffic authority) itself, in a general and fixed manner for the whole country.
From this Saturday, anyone riding an electric scooter will have to comply with the traffic rules like any other driver and may even be subjected to a breathalyser test.
The Local Police will be responsible for surveillance and enforcement and, together with the Town Hall, will set the priorities when it comes to penalising one type of behaviour or another, as the head of the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) recalled.
