Previously approved at an ordinary council meeting, Pepe García, a resident of our town, has taken office as Justice of the Peace.
The mayor of Manilva, Mario Jiménez, was present at the formal ceremony and wished him luck, hoping that he takes on the responsibilities of the post with good spirit.
Justices of the Peace are usually single-member judicial bodies with jurisdiction at local level, generally in a municipality, commune or district where there is no court of first instance. They are staffed by lay judges (without legal qualifications) who carry out judicial functions.
Their duties may include acting as Civil Registry Officer, conciliation, mediation, urgent matters in criminal and family law, jurisdiction over minor civil claims, urban evictions and social work, among others.
