Saturday was a tragic day in terms of traffic incidents, with the death, in the morning, of a motorcyclist as a result of a side-on collision with a car carrying two people, on the A-377 near the Manilva quarry at around 12:00, at kilometre point 5.2. It is the same spot where, on 12 January last year, another motorcyclist lost his life and where we have witnessed several accidents over recent years, making it a black spot on our roads.

Health services attended the motorcyclist at the scene of the accident, but could only confirm his death, and treated the two occupants of the other vehicle, who did not require hospital transfer.

Closer to the current curfew time, at around 11 pm, the driver of a vehicle lost control of his BMW and literally crashed into the Manilva Town Hall cleaning service’s rubbish lorry, which was carrying out its daily waste collection on Avenida de España in Sabinillas.

According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was travelling at high speed and the driver was unable to stop in time. The cleaning workers were lucky: at that very moment they were leaving the bins in the room that Mercadona has set aside for depositing rubbish and were not standing on the back of the lorry as they usually are. «5 seconds later and it would have killed us», one of the workers told this newsroom.

The Local Police arrived quickly at the scene, as did the fire brigade and medical services. Despite how serious the accident looked, nobody was injured.
