Another council meeting, requested by Izquierda Unida, will then begin with a single item on the agenda:
1. Proposal by the IU municipal group calling for the resignation of the mayor, Mr Mario Jiménez Rodríguez, and of the councillor, Ms Francisca López Rodríguez.
Izquierda Unida had already made its intentions known. In a statement issued in recent days, Izquierda Unida said: «we cannot allow two people who will sit in the dock accused of political corruption twice in the next two months (19 May and 9 July) to continue to be the image and highest representatives of Manilva.» The trial scheduled for 19 May, which the mayor was unable to attend for health reasons, was postponed to 23 September.
According to Izquierda Unida, «curiously, in both court cases the private prosecution has been brought throughout the proceedings by the Partido Popular. And in one of the two cases, the one to be held on 9 July, one of the main prosecution witnesses against both defendants is the First Deputy Mayor and Spokesperson of the Socialist Party, Diego José Jiménez.»
Other complaints put forward by the opposition to support its call for resignation include the systematic refusal, since the start of the term, to provide all the documentation requested by the opposition, displaying an unprecedented level of secrecy and trying to prevent opposition councillors from scrutinising the actions of the government.
The cohesion within the current governing team suggests that these requests will not receive enough support to succeed, but the opposition will be able to set out all its concerns before the public.
