The second Provincial Petanque Cup doubles the number of participating municipalities. A total of 26 are taking part in this new edition of a competition that brought together around 350 participants in its first year and, with twice as many municipalities, expects to increase participation considerably.
This was announced by the fourth vice-president and sports deputy, Cristóbal Ortega, together with representatives of the participating municipalities, which will be Algatocín, Genalguacil, Istán, Jimera de Líbar, Ojén, Manilva, Cañete la Real, Casabermeja, Fuente de Piedra, Humilladero, Ardales, Villanueva de Algaidas, Alhaurín de la Torre, Alhaurín el Grande, Alozaina, Carratraca, El Burgo, Pizarra, Tolox, Algarrobo, Almáchar, Canillas de Albaida, Comares, Riogordo, Sayalonga and Torrox.
Ortega explained that the Provincial Petanque Cup was created to meet demand for this sport in the province and to complement the petanque activities organised in the municipalities. It is a sport aimed at older people which, according to the fourth vice-president, offers health and social benefits.
The matches will begin on 1 October in Alhaurín de la Torre and Cañete La Real and continue on 8 October in Manilva and Riogordo. The second phase will take place on 5 November in Algatocín, Alhaurín el Grande, Almáchar and Villanueva de Algaidas, and the final will be held on 19 November in Humilladero.
The Cup is divided into four mixed categories: under 45s, over 45s, over 60s and over 70s. Entries can be made at the town halls until 14:00 on the Monday before each round, at a cost of six euros, except for the final, which is free.
