The intensity of the rainfall across the Costa del Sol has eased the situation of the reservoirs, including the La Concepción reservoir, which supplies the western Costa del Sol and which, after the rain of recent days, now holds 42.44 cubic hectometres, compared with almost 22.8 recorded two weeks ago. At this level it is now at more than 65% of its capacity, so water supply for next summer is guaranteed, according to the managing director of Acosol, Carlos Cañavate.
«We are quite pleased», Cañavate stressed, explaining that «from 35 cubic hectometres we have already saved the summer. We are now more at ease, and above all, we are thinking about the next water year and the months of October, November and December of this year». Thus, the 37 cubic hectometres recorded mean that the reservoir is above 50% of its capacity, so «the summer is guaranteed and until October the Costa del Sol has its water supply guaranteed».
According to the representative of the public water company, which comes under the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, this contribution «guarantees supply until the start of the next water year», which is counted «from October to October», and he assured that «this year we have it guaranteed and, in terms of tourism, we can be reassured and we will have no problem with water supply».
Cañavate recalled that the Costa del Sol system is designed to supply the 11 municipalities of the area, namely Manilva, Casares, Estepona, Marbella, Fuengirola, Mijas, Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Benahavís, Ojén and Istán, explaining that «all of them, during the water year, use a total of 100 cubic hectometres».
We remind readers that on 11 March the Drought Management Commission of the Hydrographic Demarcation of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins approved the declaration of an exceptional drought situation in the water systems of the whole of the western Costa del Sol. As a result, water may not be used for washing down streets, filling private swimming pools, watering gardens, public and private parks, golf courses, or washing cars outside authorised establishments. This situation remains in force pending further news.
