The wineries Nilva Enoturismo (Manilva), Gross Hermanos (Málaga), Martín Kieninger (Ronda), Cooperativa agrícola Virgen de la Oliva (Mollina) and Grupo Jorge Ordóñez (Vélez-Málaga) have been named winners of the 8th Wine Competition of the Denominación de Origen Málaga and Sierras de Málaga, organised by the Diputación (provincial council) to promote the province’s wine sector.
The decision was made at the Escuela de Hostelería Castillo del Marqués de Valle Niza (Vélez-Málaga), where the tasting was carried out by a jury of expert tasters: Ángel González, sommelier at the Hotel Marbella Club; journalist and food critic Enrique Fernando Bellver López; Caroline Wästersved, former sommelier at the three-Michelin-star restaurant Abac in Barcelona; and Málaga sommelier Antonio Fernández Morales.
Second vice-president Margarita del Cid stressed that «the provincial institution wants to bring these awards closer to Málaga’s hospitality sector and boost the presence of Málaga wines in restaurants, with the aim of opening up new distribution channels so that they can stand alongside the likes of Ribera del Duero or Rioja».
In this regard, Del Cid highlighted the «importance of promotion abroad, always hand in hand with the producers and distributors that make up the Sabor a Málaga brand, since thanks to their work and the quality of their products, they offer one of the best showcases of our province».
Among the actions the Diputación is carrying out with the wine sector through the ‘Sabor a Málaga’ brand are the first edition of ‘Vinarama’, an event promoted by the Regulatory Council of the DOP Málaga, Sierras de Málaga and Pasas de Málaga and by Sabor a Málaga, to be held from 26 to 28 November at La Térmica (avenida de Los Guindos, 48), and the Accredited Trainer in Málaga Wines courses, promoted by the Diputación and taught by the Training Classroom of the Regulatory Council of the Denominations of Origin Málaga, Sierras de Málaga and Pasas de Málaga.
Award-winning wineries
The jury had to deliberate between 52 wines entered in the competition by 13 wineries. After the blind tasting, which took into account characteristics such as colour intensity, the nuances on the nose, persistence on the palate and the harmony of the wines entered, the jury selected the winning wineries in each of the five categories.
Thus, the ‘Sabor a Málaga’ Award for best white wine D.O.P. Sierras de Málaga went to the Nilva 2020 wine, from Bodegas NILVA Enoturismo SL; the ‘Sabor a Málaga‘ Award for best still sweet white wine D.O.P. Málaga went to the wine N° 2 Victoria 2018, from Grupo Jorge Ordóñez; the ‘Sabor a Málaga’ Award for best red wine D.O.P. Sierras de Málaga (up to 6 months in oak barrels) went to the wine Bocatinta 2017, from Bodega Gross Hermanos; the ‘Sabor a Málaga’ Award for best red wine D.O.P. Sierras de Málaga (more than 6 months in oak barrels) went to the wine Vinana 2016, from Bodega Martín Kieninger; and the ‘Sabor a Málaga’ Award for best liqueur wine D.O.P. Málaga went to the wine Carpe Diem Transañejo 2010, from Cooperativa agrícola Virgen de la Oliva.
The competition carries a prize of €5,000 per category, in the form of the purchase of lots of the winning wines for use in the various ‘Sabor a Málaga’ promotional activities.
The award-winning wineries will be able to display the wording Premio Sabor a Málaga on their labels and will have the opportunity to represent the brand and Málaga’s wine sector at major events such as the Salón de Gourmets in Madrid, Madrid Fusión or Alimentaria Barcelona, as well as at international fairs in other countries.
