Supersol, some 15 years after opening in the town, is saying a final farewell to Manilva following its sale to the French chain Carrefour. It will close its doors for good on 11 September for minor building work and will reopen on 29 September as Carrefour Express. For the moment, it seems that the same staff will be kept on, and further recruitment has not been ruled out.
In January 2020, Supersol carried out a complete refurbishment of the whole supermarket, which meant closing its doors for the almost three months the work was expected to last, reopening in early April.
Some years ago, Supersol attempted a nationwide expansion by opening several supermarkets in the Spanish capital, which pushed it into the red, with losses of up to 15 million euros in 2018, 1.3 million euros in 2017 on top of 6.5 million euros in 2016, and a staggering 41.6 million euros of losses recorded in 2014. At the end of 2019, it was announced that it intended to sell 45 of these supermarkets through BBVA, in an attempt to clean up its accounts and focus its efforts on Andalucía, where it employed a total of 3,340 people across its 176 supermarkets in Almería, Cádiz, Granada, Huelva, Málaga and Sevilla.
In August 2020, Carrefour completed the purchase of 172 stores. According to a statement from the French company: “For the company, the integration of Supersol strengthens our commitment to omnichannel retail and allows us to be present in all formats, accelerating our growth strategy”, said Alexandre de Palmas, chief executive of Carrefour España.
With the opening of Carrefour Express, Manilva now has a wide range of supermarkets to meet the needs of all residents.
