Tonight we will be able to see a very special Supermoon

-

This 2024 is bringing us a long and varied list of astronomical phenomena that are keeping our eyes fixed on the sky. After the wonderful Buck Moon in July and the arrival of the Perseids, tonight we will have another night-time event worth watching: the moment when the moon completes its cycle, giving us the August full moon, also known as the Sturgeon Moon. This year, the most beautiful moon of the summer will be doubly special, as it will also be the first supermoon of the year and a blue moon, making this a unique date in the calendar.

Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon?

The name of this moon comes from the native tribes of North America and their strong bond with nature. It seems that the time of year when this moon appeared in the sky coincided with the most fruitful time for catching sturgeon, a large freshwater fish that was fished in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. In addition, the moonlight made it easier to catch this animal, which is why they gave the moon this symbolic name.

Where will we be able to see it?

Well, we can appreciate this spectacle of nature from anywhere, but especially from places with little light. In Manilva, the coastal path area is a place where we can see it in all its splendour.
