The Environment department of Manilva Town Hall, headed by councillor Laura López, has prepared a programme of Hiking and Environmental Education activities, called .

This programme of activities is aimed at all children and young people in our municipality, although adults who support the project (mothers and fathers, legal guardians, teachers, environmental groups, hiking associations, etc.) may also take part and collaborate.

“Proyecto Camaleón” combines two elements: hiking and environmental education.

Hiking is a healthy form of exercise, practised on paths that run through natural and/or rural areas. Paths and trails are a resource of inestimable value for all citizens: from their traditional use, linked to farming and livestock activities (owners accessing their land, moving livestock from one place to another…), or as routes between neighbouring towns; to more modern uses, such as leisure (excursions on foot, by bicycle or on horseback) or environmental education (interpretation for the protection of the local landscape, flora and fauna).

Environmental education is the fundamental key to raising awareness of the need to protect and improve the quality of our environment, especially our natural areas. This environmental education can be effective when it is participatory, that is, when those receiving it take part personally in activities.

“Proyecto Camaleón” aims to be a hiking and educational activities programme that brings children and young people closer to a conscious, experiential understanding, from which emotional bonds can be created with the natural environment and its ecosystems, as well as learning to value, enjoy and carry out actions to conserve and improve the environment.

Focusing especially on the natural wealth of Manilva and its immediate surroundings, a wide range of activities will be carried out: recreational and educational routes, field notebooks, reforestation with native species, protection of fauna and flora, and removal of urban solid waste from natural landscapes.
