The Diputación de Málaga is launching the programme ‘Mares 0,0. Cero residuos, cero plásticos’ (Seas 0.0. Zero waste, zero plastics) which aims to raise public awareness of the problem of plastics and other types of waste on our coasts. This month there will be educational talks at four schools in the province and four beach clean-up activities in the province, with the first stop at Punta Chullera beach in Manilva this Saturday, 7th, and anyone interested in taking part can sign up at www.vivirsinplastico.com/mares00/.

The Diputación’s councillor for the Environment, Inland Tourism, Climate Change and Sport, Cristóbal Ortega, explained that, according to a Greenpeace report, 80% of the waste found in the sea comes from land, while the remaining 20% comes from marine activity.

«For this reason,» he added, «a change in our habits is urgently needed. We can promote it through the awareness-raising we carry out with activities like this one, because caring for the coastal environment has an impact on our surroundings, our health and our economic model.»

In this regard, he said that ‘Mares 0,0’ is one of the activities of the Málaga + viva programme, run by the Diputación’s Climate Change service, which serves as a meeting point between people who want to take part on a voluntary basis in tackling the climate crisis and organisations that arrange and promote activities for that purpose.

The campaign, which begins next Saturday, 7 May, is run by the Diputación de Málaga in collaboration with the organisations Andalimpia, Voluntarios amigos del mar and Vivir sin plástico. The clean-up activities will begin at 10:00, when guidelines on how the clean-up will work will be given and the necessary equipment (gloves, bags and tongs) will be provided. It will last around two hours, so participants are advised to bring water, a cap and sun cream. After the collection, the plastics gathered will be sampled and weighed.

To take part, you must sign up at www.vivirsinplastico.com/mares00/, as there is a maximum of 60 participants. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

In addition, the awareness-raising talks at schools will be linked to the clean-up actions carried out on the beaches. To close the campaign, a final talk will be held at La Térmica, with a presentation of conclusions and graphic and audiovisual material from the activities carried out. This event will mark World Environment Day (commemorated on 5 June) and World Oceans Day (8 June).
