The Diputación de Málaga is once again throwing its weight behind youth basketball and is backing the staging in Manilva of the A8 Men’s Provincial Selections Minibasket Championship, which will take place from 20 to 22 January with more than 150 young athletes aged 10 and 11 from across Andalusia.
This was announced by the fourth vice-president and deputy for Sport, Cristóbal Ortega, together with Manilva’s first deputy mayor, Diego José Jiménez, and its Sports councillor, Manolo Gil; the president of the Andalusian Basketball Federation, Antonio de Torres, and the vice-president and Málaga delegate, Ricardo Bandrés.
Ortega described the event as «one of the most important youth basketball championships in Andalusia» and stressed that it «reinforces the Diputación’s commitment to youth sport and will give the province a boost as a sporting destination». The championship brings together the best players from each province, who will face each other over three days in 32 matches at the sports halls of the Ciudad Deportiva de Sabinillas and the Viñas de Manilva. It is the first step in selecting the team that will represent Andalusia at the Spanish Championship, to be held during Holy Week. The whole tournament can be followed by streaming on the #FABTV channel, with live statistics through the Afición FAB app.
The deputy recalled that this event adds to the long list of basketball activities held in the province over the past year, among them the Under-19 Basketball World Cup, the 3×3 Basketball Tournaments, the Provincial Basketball League, the 2nd Diputación de Málaga Basketball Supercopa, the Andalusian Women’s Basketball Cup and the Diputación’s Costa del Sol Basketball Tournament.
