Manilva is applying once again for the Blue Trails network award in Spain. The Environment department, led by Laura López, is preparing the questionnaires required to apply for the award. The distinction, granted by ADEAC, recognises the work carried out by the Town Hall’s Environment Area to improve and restore the natural heritage of the coast.

The Blue Trails are routes and landscape features that link beaches or marinas with a Blue Flag and make a positive contribution to the sustainable use of the coast. For the municipalities that receive the award, it is a recognition of their work to improve and restore their coastal natural and ethnological heritage.

In addition, the Blue Trails serve an important social function, as they are excellent places to enjoy nature and also act as backbone elements for the development, health and wellbeing of society as a whole.

The initiative, which is supported by the Fundación Biodiversidad of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, has as its main aim to promote the sustainable development of coastal areas by meeting a set of quality criteria that guarantee the preservation and improvement of existing environmental conditions; safety and ease of use for visitors; and integrated, coherent management of the natural, historical, cultural and ethnographic values that make up our coastal heritage. Behind this aim lies the desire to create a broad network of educational coastal trails that forge a solid link between neighbouring municipalities, strengthening cooperation rather than competition between them.

The Blue Trails have been conceived as useful resources to encourage the sustainable use and management of the coastal environment and its surroundings, through cooperation and feedback between the tourism and environmental sectors. The goal is to consolidate the Blue Trail quality mark as an award that is recognised and valued to the same extent as the Blue Flag is for beaches.

The aim of ADEAC is to promote the Blue Trails Network as a coastal management tool to enhance conservation, knowledge and leisure in municipalities along the coast. The Environment councillor stressed that we were pioneers in obtaining this award in the whole province, and that it further strengthens our commitment to the environment and to our Reserva Ecológica Playas de Manilva. It also recognises our municipality as a place where the natural environment is looked after and promoted so that it lasts over time.
