Man remanded in custody accused of sexual assault in Sabinillas

-

The Guardia Civil has arrested a Manilva resident as the alleged perpetrator of a sexual assault that took place in Sabinillas. The man is also being investigated for an alleged offence of threats and, after being brought before a court, has been remanded in custody.

The investigation began last April, when a woman went to the Guardia Civil’s main station in Manilva to report extremely serious events. According to information provided by the Guardia Civil, the victim woke up in a semi-conscious state, with various bruises on her body and with symptoms consistent with a sexual assault, without being able to clearly remember what had happened in the preceding hours.

Given the nature of the events, the case was taken on by specialists from the Women and Minors Team (EMUME) of the Guardia Civil’s Málaga Command, the unit in charge of investigating offences related to sexual violence and the protection of particularly vulnerable victims.

Following the complaint, officers carried out numerous investigative steps and gathered various pieces of evidence indicating the victim had not given consent. According to the investigation, the woman was in a situation of particular vulnerability due to alcohol consumption at the time of the events.

During the investigation, the Guardia Civil officers managed to identify the alleged perpetrator. In addition, the Guardia Civil maintains that the suspect went as far as threatening several potential witnesses with death to prevent them from cooperating with investigators.

Two weeks after the start of the inquiries, and once what were considered sufficient indications had been gathered, officers arrested the individual, who is accused of one offence of sexual assault and another of threats.

The detainee was brought before the competent judicial authority, which ordered that he be remanded in custody while the investigation of the case continues.

The Guardia Civil stresses the importance of reporting this type of offence and highlights the specialist work carried out by the EMUME units in the care and protection of victims of sexual violence.
