Following the publication yesterday afternoon of a press release from Manilva Town Hall announcing the launch of ecological workshops in the municipality’s schools, at the initiative of the company that operates the La Utrera quarry, which causes so much disruption to residents and threatens the natural surroundings where its operations are located, Izquierda Unida has issued a statement on its social media with harsh criticism of the cosy relationship between the current governing team and the company operating these facilities. The statement from this political party, which is currently in opposition, reads as follows:

Today, in yet another episode of the shameful situation we are suffering at the hands of the COMPROMISO-PSOE-PP coalition, the Manilva government has announced with great fanfare some children’s ecological workshops, sponsored by the company that owns the infamous QUARRY.

The current company, HANSON HEIDELBERG CEMENT GROUP, which has spent more than 30 years ruining the Canuto de la Utrera, spoiling our landscapes, polluting our environment to unknown levels and ruining our vineyards, is going to clean up its image with the help of the Education councillor. Once again, he has sold out for a plate of lentils, sponsoring biodiversity workshops for children in exchange for not taking on the quarry.

Gone are the council meetings in which Izquierda Unida put forward motions to install pollution monitors, or asked that the quarry comply with safety measures, or simply that it repair the damage to the Polígono road and the road leading into the facility. All of these proposals were rejected by a government that prefers to cosy up to the quarry HANSON HEIDELBERG CEMENT GROUP rather than defend the interests of its residents.

Every council meeting on the quarry has ended the same way, with false promises from COMPROMISO-PSOE-PP that are then broken, and which have now been swapped for a workshop for children and a pittance in the form of collaboration with some of the town’s sports teams.

In return, they can carry on polluting for another 40 years. And all because in the Manilva government, those who rule are the grateful bellies, ready to settle for whatever they are given.
