Hiking is an increasingly popular sporting activity in the town and, as well as providing exercise, allows us to enjoy the natural surroundings around us.
Aware of this, the Environment department, whose head is councillor Laura López, made available to residents a fold-out leaflet with seven routes that take in places of interest. It can be obtained at Manilva Town Hall, at the Mayor’s Office in Sabinillas and at the Tourism and Sports offices.
This publication includes a variety of itineraries, such as Pinar de Tábanos, a small stone pine forest; the cork oak grove of the loma del Negro; the cerro de los Castillejos, with its Late Bronze Age archaeological site; the arroyo de Alcorrín, with interesting remains of what was once a Mediterranean forest of cork oaks and Andalusian or Moorish oaks (quejigo); the views along the Vizcarronda and the old renovated 18th-century winery; the springs of la Peñuela and el Chorro; and the cliffs of Punta Chullera, a jewel of the Costa del Sol.
As well as encouraging the use of rural paths and these natural areas, the initiative promotes the revitalisation and revaluing of these areas. It is an interesting way of strengthening the protection of the rural and natural environment around us and of helping to ensure its conservation.
