Elections called in Andalucía for 17 May

-

The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, announced tonight the dissolution of the Parliament and the calling of the Andalusian elections for 17 May, “an ideal date to facilitate the highest possible turnout”, as he said in a televised appearance from the San Telmo palace. The Junta announced the address via Yotube and Canal Sur with just 13 minutes’ notice. “The moment has come”, said the leader of the Partido Popular.

The Partido Popular leader called an extraordinary meeting of the Consejo de Gobierno (regional cabinet) this afternoon since, under the Statute of Autonomy, calling an election is an exclusive prerogative of the president “following deliberation by the Consejo de Gobierno”. The Andalusian president justified the choice of 17 May, which avoids the numerous festive dates celebrated in Andalucía -although it coincides with the Jerez de la Frontera Fair, the second most important in the region-, so that the future government can be working at full capacity as soon as possible in order to “reach the summer with a clear political horizon. And likewise, this moment will allow Andalucía to face the coming months with full political and institutional capacity in an economic context that demands stability and foresight”.
