At around 13:30 on Sunday, a driver was travelling along the A7 through the municipality of Manilva, weaving from side to side and hitting the central reservation and the crash barrier several times. Meanwhile, the passenger in another vehicle travelling behind was filming him on a mobile phone, unaware at first that they were about to witness a cyclist being knocked down while riding correctly on the hard shoulder.
Nerves took hold of the drivers following the out-of-control vehicle. While the passenger asked for help for the cyclist, who was left lying on the ground, the driver decided to continue the pursuit in order to warn other drivers, and even drew alongside the erratic vehicle to make it stop because it was not in a fit state to be driven. Meanwhile, an English couple approached the scene of the collision and were the first to attend to the cyclist.
The video of the young men giving chase began to go viral on social media. At first almost everybody assumed it was a drunk driver who had fled after the collision, but sources consulted by this newsroom have confirmed that it was hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) in the driver, who is diabetic. Many brain cells stop functioning when glucose is lacking. Most of the time people notice when their blood sugar level is dropping, but on some occasions hypoglycaemia can occur without the person having any symptoms.
The cyclist, a self-employed gardener, has been admitted to the Hospital Costa del Sol. He will be unable to work for some time, but fortunately his life is not in danger. He is still awaiting an orthopaedic assessment for possible damage to his vertebrae, and initially has a cracked rib and several stitches in one leg.
The video will make anyone’s hair stand on end:
