It is a Spanish version of ‘Fast & Furious‘, but with teenagers at the wheel driving cars as fast as their love lives. Every turn is a skid. That is the premise of the film adaptation of one of the biggest young adult novel hits of recent years, ‘Culpa mía’, the first part of Mercedes Ron’s bestselling trilogy, which comes to the screen produced by Álex de la Iglesia. However, rather than opening in cinemas on Friday, it will arrive this Thursday on Amazon Prime Video, with Málaga as the main setting for the car races and whirlwind romances.
Playamar in Torremolinos and Puerto de la Duquesa in Manilva were the locations where the races and chases of this intense love story were filmed in June 2022. It stars Noah (played by Nicole Wallace), a teenager who reluctantly moves into a mansion on the Costa del Sol belonging to her mother’s new millionaire husband. Having left her boyfriend and friends behind, she meets her stepbrother, Nick (Gabriel Guevara), a rebellious young man who loves living on the edge, and together they experience a complicated and thrilling forbidden love story, with a good dose of petrol, in this motorised version of the myth of ‘Romeo and Juliet’.
Produced for Amazon by the company of Carolina Bang and Álex de la Iglesia, Pokeepsie Films (’30 monedas’), ‘Culpa mía’ is directed and written by Domingo González. The adaptation was filmed a year ago at various locations on the Costa del Sol, from Torremolinos to Manilva. A large amount of petrol was used to shoot an illegal racing scene and a police chase, both on the Playamar promenade and at Puerto de la Duquesa and Las Gaviotas in Manilva, as well as other sequences on the beaches of Cabopino and Nueva Andalucía in Marbella.
Alongside Nicole Wallace and Gabriel Guevara, the actors Marta Hazas (‘Días mejores’) and Iván Sánchez (‘Bosé’) play the parents of the protagonists, who are stepsiblings, in this adaptation of the novel published in 2017. The author herself admits that «there are things I wouldn’t have written today, because we have grown a lot, but the film keeps the essence of first love, the most intense, for which people do crazy things and make mistakes». The adaptation of ‘Culpa mía‘ certainly seems to have been a good move, since ahead of its premiere this Thursday, the producer Álex de la Iglesia has confirmed that the other two instalments of the ‘Culpables’ trilogy are already under way. There is plenty of petrol left in the tank.
