Manilva is once again unable to fly the Blue Flags on its beaches, which in other seasons have been awarded to La Colonia beach and Sabinillas beach. The Blue Flag is an international award recognising compliance with a set of established standards, such as accessibility, water quality, environmental information for users and respect for legislation. The Blue Flag campaign is run annually in more than 40 countries across five continents, including virtually all EU member states, on an independent and voluntary basis, with the participation of more than 2,000 coastal municipalities.

These awards have been won in our town for more than 20 years, with as many as 4 blue flags flying along the 8 kilometres of our beaches. Specifically, flags have been awarded to Playa del Toro, La Colonia and Sabinillas beach.

In 2021, blue flags will fly on the beaches of 31 municipalities on the Málaga coast, including, as a new addition, the inland beach of Ardales; Algarrobo; Benalmádena, for the beaches of Fuente de la Salud and Torrebermeja-Santa Ana; Casares, for Ancha beach; Fuengirola, for Boliches-Gaviotas, Carvajal, Castillo and Fuengirola; and Málaga city, for La Caleta, El Dedo, El Palo, La Malagueta, Misericordia, Pedregalejo and San Andrés.

Marbella also receives this recognition for its beaches of Casablanca, El Cable, El Faro, Puerto Banús-Levante, San Pedro Alcántara-Guadalmina, Venus-Bajadilla and Adelfas-Alicate (new). Mijas has been awarded flags for Calahonda I, El Bombo and La Cala; Nerja for Burriana and Torrecilla (also new); Torremolinos for Los Álamos; and Torrox for Ferrara and El Morche. Finally, Vélez-Málaga stands out for its beaches of Benajarafe, La Caleta and Torre del Mar.

PUERTO DE LA DUQUESA RETAINS ITS AWARD

As for marinas, Málaga province will have five flags, in Benalmádena, Caleta de Vélez (Vélez-Málaga), Estepona, Puerto de la Duquesa (Manilva) and Marbella. It will also add two further awards for two sustainable vessels in Benalmádena.

The Blue Flag has become the most recognisable and best-known symbol among the millions of users of beaches and marinas.

THE TOWN HALL ALREADY MADE A COMPLAINT LAST YEAR

The Town Hall already raised this situation last year. According to the Town Hall itself, these awards are not granted to the town’s beaches because of planning issues relating to non-compliance with the Coastal Law, and it has nothing to do with water quality or the cleanliness of the coastline.

Last year a rebuttal report was already sent to the body in question, setting out the causes of these irregularities and the firm determination to resolve them and once again have the blue flags the town deserves.
