The Town Planning councillor has put forward an important item for the next meeting of the Gerencia, which will address the impact of environmental noise caused by traffic and by industrial and recreational activities.

As noted in the European Commission’s Green Paper on Future Noise Policy, noise is one of the main environmental problems in Europe and the source of a growing number of complaints from residents.

Ruiz, aware of the problems it can cause for our health (stress, depression, sleep disturbance, damage to the nervous system and loss of hearing), will carry out a study covering this issue, in particular the A7 motorway as it passes through the municipality of Manilva. It is estimated that noise measurements on the façades of homes facing the motorway exceed 75 dB(A) during daytime hours.

The councillor stated: «4,903 people are on the municipal registration (padrón) in this area, so we consider this a priority issue, given that it is a densely built-up area, predominantly residential, where the noise level is well above the limit. For this reason, and given that the use of acoustic barriers along access roads and urban through-routes has increased in recent years, we consider the installation of acoustic barriers between the kilometre points in question to be essential,» he said.

This request will be passed on immediately to the Action Plan drawn up by the Junta de Andalucía and to the Strategic Noise Maps of the roads of the Province of Málaga, so that action can be taken as soon as possible.

The Town Hall also considers it would be advisable for these acoustic barriers to be transparent in order to avoid a greater impact on the landscape.
