Juanma Moreno announces a budget of €54.716 billion, with €11.889 billion earmarked for Education. The approval of the draft budget will show whether the construction of Manilva’s second secondary school has funding to make it a reality.
Next 28 October will be a key date for learning the Junta de Andalucía’s investment priorities for 2027. On that day the Consejo de Gobierno (regional cabinet) will approve the draft budget for the autonomous community, which will amount to €54.716 billion, 6% more than the budget currently being implemented.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Andalusian president, Juanma Moreno, during the plenary session of the regional parliament, where he outlined the main figures of a budget that provides for a significant increase in social spending and, in particular, in the funds allocated to health and education.
Will there be funding for Manilva’s new secondary school?
In Manilva, the approval of this budget brings a glimmer of hope for families across the whole education community who have spent years calling for a second secondary school to ease the overcrowding at IES Las Viñas, a school originally designed for around 700 pupils that currently has close to 1,400.
The lack of space has meant keeping prefabricated classrooms for years and adapting rooms such as the library, the cafeteria and the laboratory to meet pupils’ needs.
For the moment, the overall figures announced by Juanma Moreno do not make it possible to confirm whether Manilva’s new secondary school will be included in the 2027 budget or whether it will have a specific budget allocation. We will have to wait for the details of the draft budget to see whether any actual funding is earmarked for this infrastructure.
In recent years, families and the Town Hall itself have been requesting, without success, a meeting with the Regional Education Delegate, Miguel Angel Briones, to ask for information on the state of the project and for guarantees that construction of the new school will move beyond announcements and promises. That meeting appears likely to take place on the 30th, two days after the approval of the new budget, so there is positive hope that the new school will be reflected in it.
Almost €12 billion for Education
The draft budget announced by Moreno provides for total spending of €54.716 billion, compared with €51.59794 billion in the current budget. This represents an increase of €3.119 billion.
In addition to the €11.889 billion planned for Education, the Andalusian president outlined nearly €17 billion for Health and €3.308 billion for Dependency care. Altogether, social policies will account for around €35.2 billion, close to two thirds of the budget.
Moreno also compared the education figures with the last budget approved by a Socialist government in 2018, stating that Education spending has risen by 56% since then.
For families in Manilva, beyond the overall figures that are beyond the grasp of the average citizen, the question will be to see what part of this budget translates into specific measures for the municipality.
The draft budget will be approved by the Consejo de Gobierno on 28 October, but it will be the breakdown of the individual items that shows whether Manilva’s new secondary school is among the investments planned for 2027.
