The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a warning about a Cut-off Low (known in Spain as a DANA) that is expected to affect much of Andalucía over the weekend. According to the forecasts, the DANA is expected to be particularly severe on Sunday, focusing on the Costa del Sol coastline, with its effects starting to be felt in Málaga from Saturday. Storms and hail cannot be ruled out.
The DANA has already moved into the north of the country and is expected to affect the province of Málaga during Saturday, with a 50% chance of locally heavy rain.
The most adverse conditions are forecast for the coastal area of the province on Sunday, with a high probability of rain accompanied by storms, which could be locally heavy, as well as the possibility of hail. Temperatures are also forecast to drop by up to five degrees.
Normal weather is expected to return from Tuesday, although it is warned that the DANA could persist until the end of next week.
Juan de Dios del Pino, AEMET’s regional delegate in Andalucía, stresses the difficulty of predicting the scale of this DANA, as it does not behave like a conventional low-pressure system. A drop in temperatures of between five and six degrees is expected. For the moment, AEMET rules out any impact beyond Tuesday, although there is a possibility that it could stay put for a week in other areas of the country.
This weather event could bring the first rain in Málaga after almost 80 days of drought, in a summer that has recorded the highest temperatures in the historical records.
