The Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental and Urbaser have strengthened the selective collection service for paper-cardboard and light packaging that they provide to the member municipalities, with the addition of new machinery: six vehicles in total. They are also expanding the fleet of trucks transporting municipal solid waste (MSW) with two transfer vehicles.
The addition of these eight vehicles responds, according to the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental’s municipal solid waste delegate, Juan Luis Villalón, «to the need to cope with the peaks in production recorded during these summer months, which are due to an increase in waste generation caused by the growth in the Costa del Sol’s population».
Door-to-door
Specifically, for paper-cardboard collection there are two new vans for door-to-door collection. These vehicles collect from specific points such as municipal buildings, commercial areas, hotels and schools.
They are joined by a side-loading truck with a capacity of 25 cubic metres and internal compaction, and another top-loading truck of 20 cubic metres. These vehicles have a joystick for handling containers and a camera system for monitoring the work area.
The collection of light packaging, the yellow container, is reinforced with a side-loading truck with a capacity of 25 cubic metres and internal compaction, with the same features as the one assigned to paper-cardboard.
A rear-loading refuse compactor truck with a capacity of 16 cubic metres has also been added, which will alternate between both services.
Transfer
The Complejo Ambiental Costa del Sol (Costa del Sol Environmental Complex) has also strengthened its fleet of vehicles for MSW transfer with two trucks with 136 hp engines. In addition, a moving-floor trailer with a capacity of 90 cubic metres has been added, fitted with a new system for collecting possible drips from the waste, with slats adapted with a channel for leachate, and a retention tank.
Villalón stressed that these vehicles were selected for their technical performance, but also for their fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions.
«The Mancomunidad and Urbaser are making efforts to ensure the collection service is optimal, even in this summer period in which collection rates triple. We are increasing the equipment and the frequency of collection so that neither residents nor visitors notice these increases in waste generation».
