Indefinite strike by cleaning workers begins tonight

-

As we announced a few days ago, the general assembly of workers at the company «UTE Relima», responsible for waste collection and street cleaning in Manilva, begins an indefinite strike tonight from 22:00 after exhausting all attempts to reach an agreement to regularise the collective work agreement.

According to the staff representatives, they have now been negotiating for almost two years to secure an agreement with the company, without obtaining any of the improvements they have been requesting.

The main reasons behind this decision are as follows:
1- After 3 years we are still without a collective agreement.
2- Our wages have been frozen since the start of the contract.
3- The company has submitted a «price review» to the Town Hall, arguing that labour costs have risen, and this has not had the slightest impact on the workers’ wages.

Manilva Town Hall, following a meeting this week with the works council, expressed its full willingness to improve the workers’ conditions as well as the service, adopting a conciliatory tone and insisting on the need to redouble efforts at this time of year, when the population triples. It encouraged the workers to continue negotiations once the high season has ended, with the aim of laying the groundwork so that the operators’ situation is as favourable as possible.

According to information obtained by this newsroom, the Ministry of Labour of the Junta de Andalucía has initially set minimum services of at least 35%, so it is widely expected that the effects will be quite noticeable on the streets, as we are in the middle of the high season.
