Estepona mayor to allow swimming pools to be filled

-

The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, announced today that the neighbouring Town Hall will authorise the filling of community and private swimming pools this summer, after confirming that the water supply in Estepona is guaranteed for the summer and after the Junta de Andalucía left the decision in the hands of local authorities.

Following the recent rains, which have brought the region’s water capacity to levels similar to those recorded last year, and the new municipal infrastructure works being carried out to add up to 16,300 cubic metres a day to the network, Estepona Town Hall has decided that the use of swimming pools in housing developments and private homes can be permitted during the summer season. The mayor explained that Estepona Town Hall has been working since last year on setting up new water infrastructure in response to the drought.

Urbano explained that all the measures being carried out by Estepona Town Hall will also have a positive effect on the other municipalities in the region, since the water produced in the town will avoid the use of the shared resources available until now. In addition, the Town Hall indicated that it will make supportive use of the water produced by the new infrastructure and said it is willing to cooperate with the other municipalities with which it shares the bulk water supply network.

García Urbano recalled that Estepona Town Hall has carried out numerous works in recent years so that the technical performance of the supply network exceeds 85 per cent efficiency, almost 10 percentage points higher than the annual average for Spanish cities. In this way, water losses and leaks are avoided, making better use of this resource.

In Manilva, we still do not know what decision will be taken.
