August closes with a rise in unemployment in Manilva

Locally, the downward trend in unemployment figures in Manilva has been broken. After 6 consecutive months of decline, which had left the best figures in 16 years, August adds 21 more people to the jobless lists. Compared with recent years, August has almost always been a month in which unemployment has risen. In total, August leaves us with 927 (+21) unemployed people in the town, of whom 367 (+4) are men and 560 (+17) are women.

At provincial level, August saw a slight fall of 499 unemployed people in the province of Málaga, bringing the total to 116,342 people, although this has not prevented a drop in the number of people registered with Social Security. Málaga thus records its seventh consecutive month of falling unemployment (the run began in February) and breaks with a trend which, although apparently contradictory, is quite common: unemployment rising in August, the month that marks the peak of the tourist season.

At regional level, registered unemployment at public employment service offices in Andalucía rose by 1,051 people in August compared with the previous month, an increase of 0.16%, taking the figure to 639,334 unemployed in the region, still well short of the 700,000 mark, according to data published on Tuesday by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy. This total is the lowest for an August since 2008. Since the start of the comparable historical series in 1996, unemployment has risen in August most of the time in Andalucía (20 times) and has fallen on eight occasions, with last month’s rise being the smallest since 2016.

In Spain, the number of unemployed people registered at the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) offices at the end of August rose by 21,884 people (+0.86%) compared with the previous month. In addition, 193,704 jobs were lost, leaving Social Security registrations at 21,189,402 people, the worst August in this respect in the last five years. The total number of unemployed thus rises to 2,572,121 people in Spain, according to Ministry of Labour data, in what is the smallest rise for an August since 2016.
