Following the announcement of an indefinite strike by the staff representatives of “UTE RELIMA” (the company responsible for urban solid waste collection and street cleaning in MANILVA) after more than 2 years of frustrated attempts at negotiation to reach agreement on signing a collective agreement with the company, everything indicates that positions are drawing closer, with the mediation of Manilva Town Hall, and the strike has been called off. It could have caused serious harm to local interests and to the image of the municipality, which already endures, in high season, intense strain from the significant increase in population and, consequently, on the waste collection service throughout the municipality.
Some 50 workers are seeking pay improvements and a possible improvement in work shifts in the low season, which are due to be finalised around October, when the company and workers will sit down again, with the mediation of the Town Hall, to try to bring the negotiations to a successful conclusion.
