In recent statements, Antonio Marín, spokesman for the VOX Municipal Group in Manilva, has expressed his concern and condemnation of what he considers an escalation in drug trafficking activity in the municipality, especially in the Sabinillas area. The trigger for these statements was the appearance of 11 narco-boats off the town’s beaches, an episode which, according to Marín, is only «one more incident among those that happen every day in the municipality».
«We have been reporting for months that Manilva is becoming an operational hub for drug trafficking», he explained in an alarmed tone on behalf of the VOX Municipal Group. He added that «the relentless increase in the illegal occupation of homes, which in many cases are turned into drug flats used for street-level dealing and/or for receiving drug shipments, the continual appearance of abandoned inflatable boats left by so-called petaqueros (fuel smugglers) with fuel drums inside, and the movement of high-end vehicles in run-down housing estates, are all warning of the drug mafias’ interest in turning Manilva into an operational hub serving their criminal interests».
Meanwhile, Marín asserted, «the institutions are looking the other way, with no regard for the impact their inaction is having on the lives and economy of Manilva’s residents». A town, he continued, «whose main source of income is tourism cannot be in the news day in, day out because of incidents linked to drug trafficking», stressing the creation of a feeling of insecurity that «goes beyond our borders», with negative effects on investment and tourism development.
The increased presence of drug trafficking and related activity in Manilva, and especially in Sabinillas, has been covered by several media outlets in recent hours, which reflects the seriousness and urgency of the situation. The community, Marín said, «expects concrete responses and action from the authorities to tackle and mitigate this growing problem that threatens the safety and wellbeing of its inhabitants».
«We say it loud and clear: THERE IS NO POLITICAL WILL, clear and decisive, to solve this problem, and we do not know the underlying reasons for not taking action», declared the VOX councillor on behalf of the VOX Manilva Municipal Group. This reflection led him to ask «cui prodest». That is, he clarified, «who benefits from a situation that does so much harm to our residents».
