Two Guardia Civil officers were injured on Tuesday after being run over in Manilva. According to the information that has emerged so far, the two injured officers were going to arrest an individual who was wanted on a warrant requiring his arrest and appearance in court. The sources consulted explain that he had a police record, but no criminal convictions.
At around 20:30 on Tuesday, the individual who was to be arrested, and for whom the operation had been set up, was travelling with another man. The second man was driving the car that ran over the Guardia Civil officers. When members of the operation signalled for them to stop, the two men tried to flee through the checkpoint. It was at that moment that they hit the officers, who were run over.
In addition, some of the sources consulted explain that the vehicle reversed and drove over one of the officers injured in the operation. The officers who were run over were taking part in an operation by the Estepona Judicial Police to arrest the front-seat passenger of the vehicle, who had to answer before the court.
After the incident, the two officers were taken to a nearby hospital to assess their injuries. One of them was admitted with a serious prognosis. The other was discharged with minor injuries caused by the impact of the vehicle and the fall. According to sources consulted, the more seriously injured officer has a fractured hip and a vertebra affected by the collision.
Both men were arrested for attempted homicide and criminal damage, and one of them also because of the warrant in force from a court for his arrest and delivery to the judicial authority to answer the claim under way.
For its part, the professional association Justicia Guardia Civil, Jucil, has warned of «the settlement of drug trafficking clans in the province of Málaga and the increase in violence against the security forces».
«The lack of adequate material and human resources is allowing these organisations to operate with impunity, putting security on the Costa del Sol at serious risk», they state in a press release, citing what happened last Tuesday as an example.
For Jucil, this type of incident «shows the brutality with which these organisations operate and the vulnerability of officers in the face of increasingly armed and organised criminals», while the press release also insists on calling for the entire Andalusian coastline to be «declared a Zona de Especial Singularidad (ZES)».
