The Alcorrín archaeological site will become municipal property

-

As the mayor of Manilva, Mario Jiménez, explained, Manilva Town Hall, through its urban planning department, has signed an agreement that begins the planning process which will lead to the area where the Alcorrín Archaeological Site is located becoming part of the municipal heritage.

The mayor also said that a collaboration and conservation agreement will likewise be signed with the University of Málaga, the Institute of Phoenician Studies in Madrid and the German Archaeological Institute.

These are the first steps towards bringing this important site to light, in an area of incalculable value.
The site dates from the end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age (9th-8th centuries BC).

The fortress of Castillejos de Alcorrín, in Manilva, is an indigenous site, not a Phoenician one, with a complex system of walls and well-developed urban planning, making it one of the few excavated indigenous centres in what has traditionally been called the Tartessos area. It is probably the greatest discovery in Andalusian archaeology in recent decades, according to Fernando Wulff, Professor of Ancient History at the University of Málaga (UMA).
