Manilva Town Hall has been forced to backtrack on what it initially called a «Popular Consultation» and today made public the terms of what it now describes as a «survey».
Just two days before the survey is due to take place, the same terms, published today, acknowledge that, in accordance with article 71 of Law 7/85 on the Foundations of Local Government, this event is not a popular consultation, as this outlet reported some days ago, and they have had to include the following clarification:
«Thus, through a citizen participation process governed by these terms, which is in no way a popular consultation but a survey».
The poll carried out a few days ago on the Facebook page of Manilva WebSite was clear: of the 445 votes cast, 76% of participants (341 votes) prefer a single fair and 24% (104 votes) prefer a fair in each district.
Compromiso responds
Compromiso Manilva (an opposition party) has sent out a press release in which it says verbatim:
First of all, Compromiso Manilva thinks it is a good thing for residents to be consulted in this way, «but this procedure does not offer sufficient guarantees and does not follow the guidelines set out in current legislation. It must be approved at a council meeting, then the file must be sent to the Regional Ministry of the Presidency of the Junta and then to the Government of Spain for authorisation. These would be the steps for a serious popular consultation that guarantees the result».
«In this sloppy manner and without a regulated procedure, just putting out ballot boxes and letting anyone vote who wants to, we could end up with a wrong decision that does not have the support of the majority of residents», the political party said.
The result will be respected
Despite this, Manilva Town Hall has made a tacit commitment to respect the final result of the vote in accordance with its terms, so even if only 1% of the population turns out to vote, the result obtained will be respected.
