Process begins to allow fishermen to unload at Puerto de la Duquesa

-

After thirty years of demands from the local fishing sector, the councillor responsible for the trade, Laura López, has announced that the process has begun to allow them to unload their catch at Puerto de la Duquesa.

It should be remembered that fishermen currently transport their catch to the fish market in Estepona, with the resulting cost and risk of losing their produce.

To lay the groundwork for this extraordinary step forward, which will mean authorising the fishing fleet to unload at the port, the councillor mentioned above, the mayor of Manilva, Mario Jiménez, and councillor Diego José Jiménez met on behalf of the municipality. They did so with all the parties involved: the fishermen themselves, the Junta de Andalucía, the Public Ports Agency of the aforementioned autonomous region, and Marinas del Mediterráneo.

According to the councillor: «We are very pleased to be able to offer our fishermen this important improvement in their working conditions, after three decades of asking for it».

They highlighted the excellent rapport and the willingness to propose suitable conditions for the landing of the fishermen’s catch in our town.

For its part, the Town Hall has undertaken to install a weighing scale and everything necessary so that, once on land, they can continue with the necessary activity.

The next step will be for the Cofradía de Pescadores (fishermen’s guild) to submit the application, so that it can be processed by the Junta and then obtain the approval of both the APPA and Marinas del Mediterráneo.

The municipal officials also wished to point out that in recent years the Town Hall has supported the fishing sector with other fundamental assistance.

Fishing families are vital to the local economy and deserve the fullest commitment to their requests.
