Izquierda Unida made a strong return yesterday afternoon with the presentation of its candidate, Agustín Vargas, for the upcoming municipal elections on 28 May, at a public event held in a unit on the Manilva Industrial Estate that was filled to capacity. According to the candidate himself in his speech, the mayor did not allow them to hold the event in a public venue: «this is not the time to talk about the mayor’s cheek in banning us from holding the event in the municipal facilities, nor about the dreadful state of the access road to the Industrial Estate, which looks literally like a goat track».
Agustín Vargas left a message on his social media thanking everyone for the response yesterday. It reads as follows:
The dream continues»: Along the path of honesty, along the road of perseverance, along the highway of hope, along the dual carriageway of humility and along the motorway of hard work, effort and perseverance.
As I finished yesterday, I begin today. An opportunity is what I ask of my town, an opportunity to show the town that we are fully prepared and excited to bring about the change our town needs.
First of all, I would like to thank the great many people who, on a cold afternoon yesterday, came to the industrial estate to share with us the presentation of my candidacy for mayor.
Family, friends, local people, colleagues, endless thanks.
To the many who wrote or called to apologise for not being able to come, thank you too.
Of course, to my political team who are with me and continue to accompany me on this wonderful road we have to travel.
And of course to all those people who throughout their lives have devoted themselves to defending a party like Izquierda Unida despite the adversities, as is the case of those honoured yesterday, Manolo Sánchez «civil», Jose Tineo and María «la Cándida».
Dear people, I am still here with my team to return Manilva to the place it deserves, and above all to bring back the hope that many of you are missing!!

It was a night full of emotion, with speeches from Rogelio Pascual as local coordinator, Vicky del Río and Juan Carlos Morejón, representing the «new faces», Gema Zotano as councillor, and Agustín Vargas as candidate for mayor. The event was presented by Councillor María José Huertas, and during it the careers of three long-standing Izquierda Unida activists, Manolo Sánchez «civil», Jose Tineo and María «la Cándida», were recognised.
