The operator confirmed in early February that it has activated this technology in 121 municipalities across 38 provinces, including Manilva, up from the 93 Spanish cities it had recorded at the end of 2020.
As with all operators, the rollout is being carried out with 5G NSA at 3.5 GHz (release 15), which makes use of part of the existing 4G infrastructure. In addition, 5G NSA DSS (dynamic spectrum sharing) technology is being used, which allows 4G LTE and 5G to coexist on the same band so that the rollout can be carried out more quickly.
5G technology stands for «fifth generation» and is the latest mobile network technology, offering faster speeds and greater capacity, which will transform the way we live, work and have fun.
The 5G network offers:
– Much faster speeds. With 5G, the maximum download speed reaches up to 1Gbps, compared with 150Mbps for 4G or 300Mbps for 4G+.
– Low latency. This is very important for services such as online gaming or virtual reality. In the future, 5G will allow latencies of below 10 milliseconds.
– Greater capacity, which allows multiple services and devices to be managed at the same time, even in areas with large crowds such as festivals or mass events.
5G gives you virtually instant access to the content you want and opens up the possibility of new experiences on your smartphone, such as:
– Video streaming and video calls: 5G gives you access to higher-resolution content on your favourite platforms, lets you download it more quickly (meaning you can download a film in seconds) and allows much higher-quality video calls.
– Games: The higher speed allows higher-resolution streamed games. And the better latency means smoother online multiplayer games.
– Virtual Reality: Enjoy immersive experiences (concerts, trips, museums, sports…) as if you were really there. Discover a new gaming experience with your VR headset.
– Augmented Reality: It lets you see things that do not exist overlaid on reality. For example: furniture in a room, characters/elements from your favourite games, or the trainers or handset you want to buy in 3D, etc.
– Downloads: You will be able to upload and download photos, videos and other files much more quickly.
How can I access it?
– You only need a 5G-compatible mobile phone and tariff, and to be in an area with 5G coverage.
– There is no need to change your SIM; current 4G SIMs work.
– And of course, new 5G devices are compatible with earlier technologies (2G, 3G, 4G, 4G+).
Is the 5G network safe for health?
The answer is YES. There is no scientific evidence that mobile networks, including 5G or WiFi networks, are harmful to health. Mobile and WiFi networks emit non-ionising electromagnetic radiation and, unlike ionising radiation (such as X-rays or ultraviolet rays), it has no effect on matter beyond heating it. In any case, an enormous number of mobile phones would have to be placed next to our heads to equal the heat our heads absorb from the sun on a winter morning.
