Just a few weeks after banning bicycles from the Sabinillas promenade, Sports councillor Rogelio Pascual has come away very satisfied from the meeting held at the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental (the association of municipalities of the western Costa del Sol), where the «Cicloturismo Costa del Sol» project was discussed, including the extension of the coastal path.
An initiative that benefits Manilva
The councillor met the president, Manuel Cardeña, and María Heredia, delegate for Urban Planning and the Technical Office, along with colleagues from other town halls, to address this initiative, which is very beneficial for our municipality. In addition to the extension, bicycle parking, rest areas and shaded areas will be provided.
It is an innovative project that helps to extend the tourist season, as bicycles can be used all year round on the Costa del Sol.
Club Ciclista Manilva requested a reconsideration
Following the Town Hall’s announcement of the ban on bicycles on the promenade, the local association of cycling enthusiasts sent a letter addressed to the mayor, Jose Manuel Fernández, asking him to reconsider. In the letter, the sky-blue club set out the as yet untapped potential that the Senda Litoral (coastal path) project, which is about to be completed, could bring to tourism, and argued that Manilva cannot, by banning bicycles on the promenade, earn the rejection of the thousands of cycle tourists who will visit the Costa del Sol thanks to this project, from which, as the last municipality, or the first, it stands to benefit greatly.
Funding and beneficiaries
Backed by European funds and the Junta de Andalucía, the project will receive a contribution from the aforementioned supramunicipal body, and the beneficiaries will be the town halls that belong to the association. The aim is to link up the path and make it possible to travel along it by bicycle, bringing tourism closer to sport and vice versa.
