The Diputación de Málaga has funded a one-kilometre pedestrian path between the coastal district of San Luis de Sabinillas and the town centre of Manilva, with an investment of €1.3 million.

The president of the Diputación de Málaga, Francisco Salado, and the mayor of Manilva, José Manuel Fernández, opened the walkway today. It runs parallel to the A-377 road (Manilva-Gaucín). Salado and Fernández previously held a meeting at the Town Hall at which they discussed new projects for the municipality.

Salado stressed that the path is an example of the Diputación’s support for initiatives put forward by municipalities in the areas of pedestrian accessibility and sustainability, in this case by creating a safe pedestrian route.

He also pointed out that improving people’s mobility and facilitating communication between the coast and the interior is also a priority for the provincial institution.

For his part, José Manuel Fernández thanked the Diputación for its financial effort in making important projects a reality for the small municipalities of the province. He added that the possibility of undertaking a second stretch of the path along the road as far as the town centre of Manilva now needs to be analysed and assessed.

Until now, the eastern side of the road, at its start from San Luis de Sabinillas, had some irregular and unconnected pedestrian walkways, which were also in poor condition, while the rest of the roadside had no road works of any kind that would allow pedestrians to pass safely.

The path is three metres wide, including the space for the concrete safety barrier protecting pedestrians from vehicles using the road. The project was drawn up by Manilva Town Hall. The effective width of the path is therefore two and a half metres.

To build it, the existing hard shoulder of the road was used, creating a platform with a printed concrete slab, and in some places a rock-fill retaining wall was built to support the platform. In addition, luminous markers attached to the safety barriers on the side facing the path have been installed along its entire length.

Just where the new path ends, across the road, there is a continuous pedestrian route to the town centre of Manilva through an area that is currently being developed.
