The spokesman for Compromiso Manilva on the Mancomunidad (the association of municipalities), Mario Jiménez, has tabled a motion to be debated at the next Mancomunidad assembly and at the Town Hall council meeting, calling for the future Costa del Sol coastal train to reach Manilva. «We are asking for our municipality to be included in any studies, preliminary designs or projects for the future coastal train, and also for other municipalities such as Estepona and Casares to be included.»
«Twenty years on, it seems the future coastal train project is being revived. Málaga City Council and the Diputación de Málaga have promoted a new study, and we are asking for Manilva to be taken into account for the arrival of the railway,» says the Compromiso spokesman.
Jiménez stressed that «we do not oppose the construction of a train linking the capital with Marbella, but we do demand that it reaches our municipality. The residents of Estepona, Casares and Manilva are not second-class. We are talking about more than 120,000 people living in the westernmost part of the Costa del Sol who would once again be sidelined and forgotten by supra-municipal institutions,» he says.
The spokesman for Compromiso Manilva said that «Estepona, Casares and Manilva form a strategic tourism hub, with a population that peaks at 200,000 inhabitants in the summer season. The Mancomunidad must therefore be a fundamental vehicle for championing, uniting and defending the interests of all the municipalities that make it up,» concludes Jiménez.
