Antonio Barragán, who was the most-voted candidate for Izquierda Unida in the last municipal elections, has submitted his resignation as councillor, a post he currently held within the main opposition party after the pact between Compromiso and PSOE that left him out of the governing team. In his letter of resignation, submitted today through the registry office, Barragan cites personal and health reasons; «for personal and health reasons, in relation to the political group with which I stood in the elections, which prevent me from carrying out the duties of the post with the dedication that such responsibility entails, I feel obliged to submit my resignation as councillor, which I hereby communicate to the municipal corporation of Manilva».
On his social media he posted the following message a few minutes ago: «Dear Facebook friends, today I want to share with you my farewell to political life for various reasons. It has been 8 years representing each and every one of you, and thanks to your effort and trust we were the most-voted list in 2019. I thank you for everything you have done for me; your displays of affection in difficult moments have made me stronger and are what I take with me. I love you all very much and, if all goes well, this year I will have the greatest gift of all, health, which has eluded me for so long. Endless thanks!!! Farewell!!! I raise a toast to all of you!!!!»
In his letter, Barragan asks that «the list that stood in the last municipal elections of 2019 be run down», in which Izquierda Unida faces the resignation of the next two people who would have to take up the councillor’s seat: Francisco Candiles, who was number 8 on the list, and Feur Hollman, number 9. All indications are that Almudena Salazar, who was number 10 on the Izquierda Unida list, could be the one to take up the seat vacated by her colleague, just months before new municipal elections are held.
