The University of Málaga (UMA) returns to Manilva to hold the 8th Urban Planning and Environment Conference. This Costa del Sol town was one of the first to join the ‘UMA en la provincia’ programme, a partnership that is now well established, as this year sees the eighth edition of the conference on urban planning, land use and the environment.
The event, which is free to attend, is organised by the Fundación General de la Universidad de Málaga (Fguma) and the local council, and will take place on 20 October both in person and by streaming.
According to a press release, it is a meeting of professionals from the sector which will analyse the Ley de Impulso para la Sostenibilidad Territorial de Andalucía (LISTA) and its Regulations. A general assessment will be given of the new Andalusian urban planning model, as well as its connection with the principles and values that must be protected.
Both bodies have signed the agreement to continue this joint work. The signing was attended by José Manuel Fernández, mayor of Manilva, and Diego J. Vera, managing director of Fguma.
Also present were Antonia Infantes, academic research coordinator at Fguma, and Ildefonso Narváez, municipal legal officer and director of the event together with Esther Rando, lecturer in Administrative Law at the UMA.
«These conferences have become a benchmark in the urban planning debate across Andalucía», said Vera, while explaining what an achievement it is for any event to continue for eight consecutive years.
«Málaga has a very diverse and rich province and it would be a mistake on the part of the University not to make the most of this potential», the director of Fguma emphasised.
For his part, Fernández thanked the University for its commitment to this project and noted that each edition is followed by people from different parts of Spain and Latin America.
This time, the speakers will include Luciano Parejo Alfonso, professor of Administrative Law at Carlos III University of Madrid, who will give a lecture offering a holistic view of land-use and urban planning in coastal areas.
The management model for urban planning activity championed by the LISTA will also be addressed by Salvador Martín Valdivia, associate professor of Administrative Law at the University of Jaén.
In addition, Luis Villares Naveira, a judge at the High Court of Justice of Galicia, will speak on the principle of environmental non-regression and its effects on land-use planning.
Finally, José Suárez Padilla, lecturer in Historical Sciences at the University of Málaga, will talk about the Alcorrín archaeological site, which Manilva Town Hall aims to turn into an international reference for research into Phoenician culture in Europe.
The full programme and registration are available on this page https://fguma.es/jornadas-manilva-2023/ Although registration remains open until 13 October, 90 people have already reserved a place.
The conference is held with the collaboration of the Asociación de Estudios Urbanísticos y Territoriales Teatinos, the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental and Santander Universidades.
